Clarence Saunders Brigham (1877-1963) began his distinguished library career while a student at Brown University. After graduation in 1899 he was appointed librarian of the Rhode Island Historical Society and in 1908 he left that position to accept the offer of the librarian's post at the American Antiquarian Society.
